Executive Summary
Dataset generated 2026-06-19. 3448 games have Steam review data; 1989 classified into themes.
This report analyses the idle/incremental game market using Steam as the quantitative spine, finding 8 distinct themes. The most represented theme in the corpus is rpg (classified from Steam user tags + description keyword matching — medium confidence; the prevalence of "rpg" reflects the common community "RPG" tag on Steam idle games). See Methodology. By weighted performance score (review % × log owners), nature leads the ranking. Potentially underserved niches (low supply, high demand): nature.
Building an Idler: What the Data Says
- Rising themes (better recent-year reviews than older releases): rpg, space, factory, money, nature, fantasy.
- Update cadence matters: the update-cadence chart shows whether active upkeep correlates with review score in this corpus.
- Price and business model: the monetization charts show how free-to-play and paid tiers distribute across the catalogue.
- Mobile is not covered. The above reflects Steam only.
Theme Landscape
n = number of games per theme. Owner counts are SteamSpy modeled estimates — not verified sales. Weighted score = review% × log(1 + owners).
Supply vs Demand Gap Map
Supply = number of games (Steam corpus). Demand = weighted score (review% × log owners, SteamSpy estimates). Red markers are underserved themes: supply ≤ 25th percentile AND demand ≥ median. Confidence: medium — thresholds sensitive to corpus size.
Theme Performance Ranking
Weighted score = review_pct_positive × log(1 + total_owners). Owner counts are SteamSpy estimates. Themes with no owner data excluded.
Feature Impact on Review Score
Delta = mean review % for games with the feature minus mean review % for games without. Positive = feature correlates with higher reviews. This is correlation only — small n may be unreliable. Features: offline_progress, prestige (mechanic tags), is_free (price field).

Art Style Distribution
Art style is classified from each game's real Steam user tags (e.g. "Pixel Graphics", "Anime", "Hand-drawn") fetched via the SteamSpy appdetails endpoint. 3,206 of 3,479 games have an art style assigned. Tags are crowd-sourced — community-applied and can be noisy or popularity-biased (medium confidence). Owner counts are SteamSpy modeled estimates. See Methodology for full caveats.
Update Cadence
Active ≤ 30 days since last update; Occasional 31–120 days; Abandoned > 120 days or no update detected. Update dates from Steam store scrape.
Release Trends
Releases per year from Steam release dates. Covers 19 calendar years. Median review % per year shown on secondary axis.
Naming Patterns
Pattern counts and mean review % by title keyword match. Patterns are derived from game title keywords only (e.g. titles starting with "Idle …" = idle_x; titles ending in "… Clicker" = x_clicker; all others = creative). This is a surface-level heuristic — not a validated genre classification.
